1st UKCGE Conference on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Postgraduate Research

Sheffield Hallam University played an active role in the 1st UKCGE Conference on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Postgraduate Research held in Sheffield on Thursday 2nd – Friday 3rd November 2023.
The university’s participation featured a diverse range of speakers and topics aimed at addressing various aspects of equity, diversity, and inclusion in postgraduate research. Some of the topics and speakers included:
Keynote Panel Discussion — The Experiences of PGRs: Anita Chonzi, a Doctoral Candidate at Sheffield Hallam University, contributed to a keynote panel discussion, providing valuable insights into the experiences of postgraduate researchers (PGRs). This session delved into the challenges, successes, and unique perspectives of individuals pursuing doctoral studies.
Accomplished Study Programme in Research Excellence (ASPIRE): Dr. Ifedapo Francis Awolowo, associated with Sheffield Hallam University, presented on the Accomplished Study Programme in Research Excellence (ASPIRE). This program focuses on enhancing the quality and impact of research endeavors, showcasing the university’s commitment to promoting access and participation in postgraduate research.
Research Culture, Community Building, and Wellness: Dr. Márjory Da Costa Abreu, Dr. Elizabeth Scanlon, Liz Brearley, and Rebecca Oldfield from Sheffield Hallam University addressed the critical aspects of research culture, community building, and wellness with a focus on inclusivity. This session explored strategies to foster a supportive and inclusive environment for postgraduate researchers.
PGR Student Support, EDI, and Professional Services: Another session featured Dr. Márjory Da Costa Abreu, Jennifer Sturch, Rachael Toogood, and Alexandra Preston from Sheffield Hallam University. This discussion centered around the role of professional services in supporting postgraduate researchers, with a specific emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).
Challenges in Evaluating Collaborative Postgraduate WP Work – The YCEDE Program: Professor Colin McCaig and Lucy Clague from Sheffield Hallam University addressed the challenges in evaluating collaborative postgraduate Widening Participation specifically focusing on the YCEDE program. This session explored the complexities and successes of collaborative initiatives aimed at increasing access to postgraduate education.
Pre-doctoral Outreach Program for EDEPI Recruitment: Dr. Susan Campbell and Jessica Bamonte presented a pre-doctoral outreach program designed to facilitate recruitment to the EDEPI program at Sheffield Hallam University. This initiative focused on engaging potential postgraduate researchers from the NHS early in their journeys, promoting diversity and inclusion in doctoral programs.
