How architecture and urban design can shape active lives

Throughout July, the AWRC played host to Dr Carlos F. Lahoz-Palacio, an architect and Professor at Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid. The month-long visit was organised to deepen collaboration between the AWRC and the Rey Juan Carlos University’s Centre for Sport Research (CIDE).
To mark the end of his time with us, Dr Lahoz-Palacio delivered a thought-provoking seminar exploring how architecture and urban design can shape active lives.
He shared insights from his extensive work on the design of Active Cities, exploring how urban design can create healthier, more physically active communities. This included:
- An introduction to the Torreactiva Master Plan (2022) – a strategic initiative for the municipality of Torrelodones, built on urban auditing, citizen participation, and actionable proposals for a more active and healthier urban environment.
- An introduction to his book, Hacia la Ciudad Activa, which compiles theoretical and practical approaches to integrating physical activity into urban design.
- An overview of the current research project on the Spanish Urban Agenda, with a focus on embedding Active City principles into national urban policy frameworks.
Throughout the session, and with the audience, Dr Lahoz-Palacio explored the intersection of architecture, urban design, physical activity and public health through an international lens.
It was a pleasure to have Dr Lahoz-Palacio with us and to have the opportunity to learn from his fascinating work. We look forward to welcoming him back again in the near future.
