AWRC publishes policy report on prevention and physical activity
Yesterday, we launched our new policy report ‘Delivering the Prevention Legacy for the NHS: Innovations that Help People Move’ in Westminster. The event was a powerful demonstration of the critical importance of a shift to a healthcare system which centres communities and preventative health.
In light of the ongoing NHS 10-year plan development, the report sets out the urgent need to prioritise prevention in healthcare and the role of physical activity in tackling health inequalities.
Drawing on evidence from across our portfolio, and our collaborations with industry, healthcare, education and the public and community sectors, we propose three key system-shaping recommendations:
Prioritise investment in community health building and community-driven health initiatives- Expand established and evidence-based rehabilitation (including prehabilitation) programmes
- Develop a workforce equipped to prioritise physical activity in healthcare
Listening to our brilliant speakers Abtisam Mohammed, Clive Betts, Simon Opher MP and Prof Rob Copeland, it was clear that there is strong support for making prevention a priority.
Our panel included Baroness Sater, Lucy Melleney and Richard Stubbs, and was expertly hosted by David Lee. It was an insightful and thought-provoking discussion around how to make a prevention legacy happen.
While the discussion encapsulated a diverse range of views, what stood out most was the unity of the message: courageous investment in preventative health and communities is essential to the future health of our NHS and society as a whole.
A huge thank you to everyone who organised, participated in, and attended the event yesterday. We had some fantastic conversations on the day, but it’s crucial we keep the momentum going.
