Mentoring the Apprentice
Appointing a mentor
The mentor can be the apprentice’s line manager, but be aware that the developmental objectives that a mentor needs to support the apprentice might sometimes seem to hold tension with the business and performance KPIs that a line manager may need to focus on. Be sure the chosen mentor understands their role and is supported by the organisation. For further information and training in that role we can help.
Employer duties
Your duties as an employer are governed by the Apprenticeship Funding rules set out by the Education and Skills Funding Agency. The key things are set out in the Commitment Statement that you as an employer have signed along with the University and the Apprentice. We have a shared duty to support the apprentice and a key part of that is for you, the employer, to put in place and support a mentor for the whole apprenticeship journey.
