The following table is a list of resources which Course Leaders can provide to students pre-arrival.
Although for each course the content of pre-arrival resources will vary, the aim is to develop some prearrival resources for all courses. As a minimum for 2020/21 Course Leaders needs to ensure that course online Reading Lists and Course Guides are up-to-date. We would also like Course Leaders to consider creating some short talking heads and welcome videos, no longer than 1 minute in length.
Resources are available to support the development of videos and screencasts.
|Pre-arrival Resources||Guidance for Course Leaders|
|Course pre-arrival sites and tasks||Many courses already have pre-arrival sites or Virtual Learning Environments (VLE)/Blackboard sites. These sites can be a good way to start to set student expectations of their learning experience early and communicate course-specific information.
Pre-course tasks can be included in pre-arrival sites. Links to the sites can be emailed directly to students by the Course Leader and/or included on the Welcome Blog.
Other potential content to include is an example timetable, popular course-specific FAQs, testimonials from current students, pre-arrival tasks, course videos, screencasts, talking heads.
|The Transition Toolkit||The Transition Toolkit resource provides a proven and developed model which takes an innovative approach towards supporting the transition into higher education from a learning and teaching perspective. The resource does this by offering a short immersion into a given subject; this immersion places disciplinarity at its heart, both in how the subject is taught at Sheffield Hallam University, and how the tools of the discipline are used professionally. This supports transition into the academic aspects of a student’s course whilst also encouraging early thinking about transition beyond graduation and into the world of work.|
|Course introductory screencasts/videos||These resources can give an overview of both course staff and content. A script for course videos can be provided.
Course videos/screencasts can be included on pre-arrival sites.
|Inspirational videos and talking heads||Student feedback notes that short talking head videos by academic staff/Course Leaders are beneficial to receive before arrival.
Student inspirational videos can be used as a motivational tool for students.
These can be included on pre-arrival sites, or as part of another welcome week session. Course Leaders will need to produce any videos and/or screencasts for their course.
|Core Reading Lists||Core reading lists should be made available to students’ pre-arrival. A link to these can be added to the Welcome Blog. For support with this, Course Leaders should contact the subject area Librarian.
Reading List can be accessed online. Reading lists can be edited by logging in with a staff SHU login.
|Course guides /handbooks||Course Leaders will be requested to update course guides and handbooks. Course Leaders should work with Course Administrators to create content. These will be uploaded to the Welcome Blog.|
