To fully enrol, receive your student funding and meet the requirements of the course you are required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure.

The DBS will provide details held within a criminal record, and whether you are barred from working with children.

The DBS application is a two-step process – an online application and ID check.

Step one – Online application

  • You will receive an email with information about your online application.
  • The email will come from shudbs@ebulk.teammatrix.com (please check your junk folder)
  • You will need your SHU ID number which can be found in your offer email and is eight digits long.

Step two – Online ID Check (following completion of step one)

  • The second email will  also come from shudbs@ebulk.teammatrix.com. (Please check your junk folder)
  • You will need a biometric passport to complete the online digital check
    • If you do not have a valid biometric passport, you must attend a face to face drop-in sessions  at the University (see below)

Face to Face ID check if required

  • You need to bring three forms of ID to the session, and we can only accept the Government approved documents .
  • One of the documents must be from Group 1.
  • The remaining two documents can be from any of the three groups.

Overseas applicants

  • You are not required to undertake a DBS ID check until you have arrived in the UK and are registered at a UK address.  You will need to apply for a Criminal Record Certificate from your home country.  Please click here for further details.

If you have any questions or concerns about making a DBS application, including any queries in relation to lack of documentation, name changes, gender reassignment, please contact professional checks@shu.ac.uk.  If you have a previous  identity that you do not wish to be disclosed on your DBS certificate, we can put you in touch with the DBS sensitive applications team who will advise you of what you need to do.

Update Service

  • The update service allows your certificate to be ‘transferable’ as other providers can check this online.
  • The update service costs you £13 a year (the university does not cover this), but you are required to sign up your DBS within 30 days of the certificate being issues.
  • Further information can be found here.
  • If you currently hold a DBS which is registered with the update service, please contact professionalchecks@shu.ac.uk to find out if this is the correct level for your course.
