PhD Thesis Title: In-vitro 3D bio-printed bone model development utilising high resolution micro-computed tomography
Director of Studies: Dr Nicola Aberdein
Supervisor: Dr Tim Nichol, Professor Christine Le Maitre

SUMMARY

Lucy completed her BSc in biomedical sciences, and MSc in cancer biology at Sheffield Hallam university.

Lucy has research interests in the innovative field of tissue engineering, particularly the translation of high-resolution imaging into functional biomedical models.  Alongside research, Lucy is a graduate teaching assistant, achieving an AFHEA.

RESEARCH

In comparison to traditional 2D monolayer cell culture, 3D in vitro models are more representative of the biological functions of physiological tissue for use in biomedical research.

This research focuses on the translation of cortical and trabecular bone morphology captured with high resolution micro-computed tomography from ex-vivo bone samples, into 3D bio-printable bone models utilising in-silico computed assisted design (CAD) processing.

The bio-printed bone models undergo assessment of the structure in relation to the CAD model, physical properties, and molecular profile in relation to bone.
