What is LinkedIn Learning?

LinkedIn Learning (previously Lynda.com) is an online educational platform that helps students discover and develop creative, technology-related and study skills through expert-led course videos. Each course is broken down into a series of short videos that are easy to follow. Some courses in LinkedIn Learning provide students with a certificate that they can post to their LinkedIn profile. Courses cover areas such as multimedia, project management, programming languages and research techniques.

Areas where you can support students with LinkedIn Learning:

  1. Employability skills: suggest courses that are relevant to their profession.
  2. Study Skills: support student skills with guidance.
  3. IT Skills: develop students technical skills by sharing resources that are required for the course.
  4. Additional Resource: provide extra content covering key themes and subjects.
  5. Certification/CVs: students can evidence their skills for future employers.

LinkedIn Learning has a wealth of courses that staff could use for their own development.

How to access LinkedIn Learning?

To access LinkedIn Learning enter https://go.shu.ac.uk/linkedinlearning in a web browser and login using your Sheffield Hallam credentials. When you login, you will have the basic account assigned to your account.

How to integrate in Blackboard?

LinkedIn Learning lets you share whole courses and also custom courses known as learning paths. The main way of sharing content in your module is by sharing the link, which can be found by clicking the share button in the top right corner of your LinkedIn Learning content.

If you are sharing a whole course there is a tool that is available on Blackboard module sites that allows for LinkedIn Learning built-in courses to be added.

Share a whole course with your students

To share a whole course you will need to make ‘Content Market’ available in the ‘Tool Availability’ options and select ‘Content Market’ in the ‘Assign Textbook’ drop down. You will then be able to see an option for LinkedIn Learning where you will be able to search for a course and add it to your site. There aren’t any special permissions required to add a course to your Blackboard site.

Share a learning path with your students

Another option is to combine parts of courses to a custom playlist that students can go through. This is called learning path and it lets you pull together parts of different courses from LinkedIn Learning, in addition to adding your own content where needed. To do this you will need the Curator role.

Curator Role

The Curator role lets you create and share learning paths. You will be required to actively curate the courses to ensure that they are suitable for students to use. With the Curator role, you can also view analytics of content that you have created and access/edit and delete content.

The three features of the Curator role are:

  • Learning paths: a sequential way of presenting content provided by LinkedIn Learning and that you have uploaded. It’s ideal if you want students to work through content in a certain order. When sharing a learning path, it’s important that you use the ‘Share via link’ option which is available in your LinkedIn Learning library.
  • Collections: a way of collating courses that are available in LinkedIn Learning and placing them together.
  • Custom collection: content that you have uploaded that can be used in your learning paths.

To get the Curator role assigned to your account contact: digitallearning@shu.ac.uk. After you have been assigned the Curator role you will receive an email from LinkedIn Learning, select the “Get Started” option in the email to start using the Curator role.
