Assessment item creation in 2020/1 Blackboard module sites
Thank you for providing the dates for assessment submissions during the recent data collection exercise. The data has now been uploaded into SITS which has enabled the automatic set up of assessment submission item types i.e. your assessment submission point(s) in 2020/1 Blackboard module sites for both summative tasks and sub-tasks.
Where Module Leaders entered assessment submission due dates in their department spreadsheet a submission item type will have been set up with the date provided.
Where Module Leaders did not enter an assessment submission due date, a default submission item type of ‘Online Assignment (Individual)’ and an assessment submission due date of 25/12/20 will have been created as a holding date. Wording has been added to the student assessment statement to say that any date showing as 25/12/20 is a holding date and the actual submission due date will be confirmed a.s.a.p.
If your assessment submission item type has a submission date of 25/12/20 please complete the relevant college form below, to confirm what the correct submission date is.
Please DO NOT make any changes to your assessment task title, submission due date or time in Blackboard. Please use the college form below to request a change, you will then be advised on what action you need to take. Any changes may result in the Capping Report not working properly as it relies on the sets of data being identical in both SITS and Blackboard.
The deadline for submitting change requests via the college forms below is Friday 9 October.
Important note
This year it was agreed with Heads of Teaching & Learning that assessment submission item type task titles would be populated in Blackboard with the task number and task description held in SITS. Detailed information about the task including the title needs to be provided to students via the assessment brief rather than the submission point.
What next?
Please check the assessment item type and date is correct in the Assessment area, Reassessment area and Grade Centre of your Blackboard module sites:
- Where assessment items have been set up automatically, please ensure that these have been set up as you would expect and add any additional content, feedback rubrics, or change to a group assignment type as you would do normally, and as outlined in the University Policy for Assessment – see the Assessment and Awards web pages.
- Where we were unable to automatically create weighted columns for tasks with subtasks, you can set them up yourself or contact the Digital Learning Team if you require support setting them up.
- If a module Blackboard site is missing, you can request it yourself or contact the Digital Learning Team for guidance on how to request one. Then complete the relevant college form below to provide the details of the submission item type (submission point) that needs setting up.
Do you need to make a change?
If you need to make a change to your assessment item type, due date, due time, IMR date and/or ask a question about your submission point please complete the relevant college form via the links below, by Friday 9 October. Please note requests for changes will need to be completed at task level.

- College of Health Wellbeing and Life Sciences change request / issues form
- College of Social Science and Arts change request / issues form
Please use this form for advice and guidance instead of contacting your Department Manager and/or Academic Administration Teams with queries. This work is being managed centrally this year rather than through your Academic Administration department teams. Department teams will not be able to respond to any queries that are sent to department email inboxes, as they will not be aware of any of the detail.
