Seminar: Intelligent Robotics in Care of People: Opportunities & Research Challenges

Assistive robotic systems have the potential to support various health and care services, help independent living, and even simulate affection to reduce loneliness.

In this seminar, Prof. Alessandro Di Nuovo, Lead of the AWRC Research ThemeĀ ‘Digital and Technological Innovations to Promote Independent Lives’ talks us through a selection of his recent projects, while Co-Lead Dr Jims Ningshen Marchang discusses issues relating to privacy and security.

The seminar provides an overview of the application of Intelligent Robotics to quality care and wellbeing while taking advantage of computational intelligence for data collection and early diagnosis. It emphasizes the importance of embodied artificial intelligence and multimodal interaction to provide individualised assistance to people (e.g. children with autism and adults with frailty), and highlight the multi-disciplinary nature of this research area

Significant results from several research projects are discussed, providing an overview of the current state-of-the-art in the field and potential breakthroughs and implications for professionals in various disciplines. The importance of responsible user-centred research, which empowers people rather than substituting them is highlighted, including the need for security and privacy safeguarding mechanisms to enhance users’ trust and improve social acceptance and adoption.
