Gill Furniss MP visits Active Together at the AWRC
We were delighted to welcome Gill Furniss, MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough to the AWRC last week, to find out more about our flagship Active Together programme.
The community-based programme helps cancer patients prepare for and recover from treatment through tailored exercise, nutritional and psychological support. It has been developed by researchers at the AWRC and is delivered by NHS Trusts and community settings across Yorkshire with funding from Yorkshire Cancer Research
Patients who participate in the programme have showed an overall 10% increase in survival rates. This innovative approach could save the NHS more than £100 million over five years if implemented nationally and more if expanded to include people with other cancers.
Gill met an Active Together participant and members of staff and found out more about the programme, the AWRC and our response to the Government’s forthcoming National Cancer Plan, which recommends including embedding exercise into cancer treatment pathways.
