Living Well with a Health Condition

This morning Yorkshire Cancer Research’s Baton for Yorkshire relay stopped by the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC). The month-long event is part of the charity’s We Walk for Yorkshire campaign, in which people across Yorkshire are covering 35,000 miles to recognise the 35,000 people diagnosed with cancer in the county each year.

The baton was carried from the city centre to the AWRC by Sheffield boxer star Johnny Nelson MBE and three-time Grammy award winner Aaron Casserly Stewart. Following his own prostate cancer diagnosis, Aaron is raising awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, especially among black men, who are disproportionately affected by the condition.

Simon Twigge, who received support from our Active Together programme following his own cancer diagnosis, is now carrying the baton on the next leg of the relay alongside team members Gail Phillips and Helen Ross. They are currently walking 8 miles through south-east Sheffield’s parklands towards Crystal Peaks. Simon’s participation in Active Together helped him to build his strength and maintain cardiovascular fitness, helping him to continue his much loved long walks in the Yorkshire countryside.

Tune into ITV Calendar tonight to see the relay in action!
