Prevent

The University must have due regard to the need to prevent people being drawn into terrorism (the Prevent duty). That includes all our staff and students understanding the context around them and how to register any concerns through Report and Support.
Also, universities have a general legal duty to secure freedom of speech on campus, within the law. Here is the University Freedom of Speech Code of Practice

For information, view the University’s Safeguarding Policy.

3 facts on Prevent

  1. For the fifth consecutive year, Extreme Right-Wing concerns (1,798 referrals) outnumbered Islamist concerns (870 referrals).
  2. While the majority of education referrals originate from secondary schools, 65 Higher Education referrals escalated to Prevent partners in the 2023-24 reporting period which was nearly double the number from 2020-21
  3. Local authorities have identified that the primary radicalisation dangers for young people in Sheffield are increasingly “external,” occurring in community spaces and online rather than within the home. This has led to a shift in local strategy toward Contextual Safeguarding, which addresses risks found in parks, neighbourhoods, and digital platforms.
