Your employer’s policies

Your employer will have a set of policies or practice information and possibly training resources in relation to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). The material might have a different heading and might for example be found in the box marked Corporate Responsibility, Social Objectives or something similar.

The content, approach and expectations will be informed by widely applicable UK law such as the Equality Act. It will also be informed by sector specific laws and regulations and importantly by the ethos and reality for your own organisation in its sector and function within the economy and society.

The content will express the general expectations of your behaviour as an employee and it might be directly linked to the function of your job role as you connect to colleagues and external stakeholders, customers and clients.

You need to access and review the document(s) as an absolute minimum.

When reviewing your employer’s policies consider the following questions.

  • Whose job is it to write and review the documents?
  • How does your organisation monitor and influence the impact of the documents?
  • What do they mean for you in practice, in your job role?
  • How does the content relate to other frameworks? (for example see the British values section of this web resource)
  • What would you do to challenge or improve the documents, or their reach and impact?
  • What actions are you going to include in your overall training plan and discuss at your Apprenticeship Progress Review?
